Day 7 AM – 300 Steps to Greatness

Good Morning Family!

How can I help you?

I can’t believe it’s been nearly a week since I started on this journey.  What have I accomplished in that time in relation to my long term goals?

I snagged some pretty high-profile interviews.

I hosted a radio show to describe the 300 steps initiative and surpassed my private goal of having at least 300 people listen in the first week!

I’ve written every day and as a result had several articles published online.

I’ve blogged every day.

I’ve heard very encouraging reports from two people I “mentor”, one who got a great offer from a major network and another who is actively working towards the goal of traveling as a lifestyle.

I’ve gotten some people to share their goals with me online!

More importantly, the fact that I am still standing with my faith in God intact means that I survived the attacks of the enemy on me and my household this week.  Trust me, they were INTENSE!

Have you ever noticed that just as wonderful opportunities present themselves enormous troubles present themselves as well?

That’s one reason I developed this community.  If it was easy to just say what you want to accomplish and then JUST DO IT – there would be no need for support groups such as this.  And this group is about encouraging you, just as much as it about encouraging ME!

If you have not yet put up your goals or have not followed through on any of those you have posted, guess what?  It’s only 7 days into this journey.  We still have 263 more.  I am fully vested into each of you and WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO GIVE UP!

Besides, there are STILL 349 days left in 2011.  So if you haven’t started – you can start and STILL have PLENTY of days off and meet your 300 Steps to Greatness goals 🙂

I am very thankful for everyone who has prayed on my behalf this week.  You are an incredible blessing in my life.

My goals for today:

Attempt to plan my week.

Return some phone calls.

Edit three articles and compile another.

READ, and EXHALE with my son.

Oh yeah, and get some exercise in 😦

  1. Thank you. Yes it helps a lot actually. I will definitely pick up “The Artist’s Way.” Oh and I love your day to day line. I hope you don’t mind if I use it…. I will credit you of course. Thanks again.

  2. Nee Nee: Believe me when I tell you that MOST of us have a “black cloud” over us, but not everyone is able to share it. I coined a phrase several years back, “Don’t let the day to day get in the way of your day today.” And even though I remind myself of that, it’s still easier said than done.

What amazes me most is that you can spend so much time developing a habit, and it only takes one day to get off track. What we lose sight of, is that it really only takes one day to get back on the right track.

When I started this group, one thing I wanted to ensure is that people do not feel condemned if they miss a day or two. Like I stated this morning, there are far too many days left in the year. The main goal is to create a community of supporters who are taking DEFINITE steps towards their goals!

When I get blocked, here are a few things that I do:

DON’T WRITE! It relieves the pressure of writing. I spend time doing something that I enjoy and more time being CREATIVE – the thought process behind writing.

READ! I tend to read a lot of informative, inspirational books, but, when I get blocked, I read something comedic, something fun.

GO ON A CREATIVE DATE! “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron encourages creative types to go on a date with themselves on a regular basis. It can mean going to the movies, spending time in the park, but, the idea is to GET OUT! (When you get a chance check out the book!)

MORNING PAGES! From “The Artist’s Way” again is a suggestion that REALLY works. Keep a blank pad and a pen/pencil near your bed. When you first wake up, WRITE! ANYTHING! Write how you are feeling. Write what you want to do for the day. Write your thoughts – just freestyle! It doesn’t have to make sense at all. It’s just about clearing your mind of clutter first thing in the day so that you can get STARTED with your day without it! She suggests three pages and here’s an example:

“I just woke up and I don’t feel like doing these stupid morning pages. I don’t even understand why they need to be handwritten and not typed. I need to make a doctor’s appointment today, but, I have to look up the number. It’s cold right now and I need to turn the heat up.”

NO LIMITS/NO BOUNDARIES! I know many writers who place restraints on their writing time, i.e. writing 500 words per day or more. Personally, that has NEVER worked for me. My goal is always to write or complete an article. Save the timelines for when someone is paying you!

Example: The typical word count for an article is 400 words. I just WRITE. I OVERWRITE! Then I edit it down, but, I don’t count the words along the way. I wait until I’m done and then I find the word count and work from there.

Another thing I do, which many people advise writer’s against, but, works for me: I work on more than one project at a time. If I get stuck with one, I go to another one until I finish or get stuck! It doesn’t mean that I’m not focused, it’s just that I work with what motivates me to keep writing.

RESEARCH! Instead of writing when you’re blocked, do some research or read articles pertaining to your craft or subject matter.

    Hope this helps!

  3. This has been a particularly trying week and I am relieved, in a way, that this dark cloud has not been reserved for only the space above my head. I see this has been a crazy week for many of us and to have a place to share is a blessing in itself. I am not alone. And for that I do not feel bad, like I may have about a month ago, about not getting some things done because “life kinda got in the way.” A few of the days this week my personal goal was to just get through the day without __________! (you can fill in the blank- i.e. going to jail, losing hope, losing myself).

I am proud to say that I’ve been taking small steps toward my goals. I found Zumba (dance/aerobic) classes in my area that fit into my schedule. And I have been actively spending to more time with friends and family. Where I’ve been falling short is with my writing. I am having difficulty finding that space from which my creativity flows. I am blocked. I have blockage (its a word because I said it! LOL!). I lost my mojo. So, my question to this community is: How do I find my mojo? In other words, when life gets in the way how do you find your way back? I love to read and I love to write. But somehow I’ve gotten so far off on a tangent I cannot seem to find my way back. I thought maybe joining a community of writers would help so I began to participate in A Round of Words in 80 Days writing challenge where I post writing goals for the the next 80 days and check in to keep the community abreast of my progress. It worked for about a week then I missed a few check ins. Now I feel like I’m “behind” and need to play catch up! Ugggghhh!

I know I will get pass this but I would like to know what others do to get pass their own blockage.
